Chapter 21

Motivation

Despite Lina’s assertion to the contrary the following day involved no anchor moving what-so-ever. Nor did the day after or day after that. In fact, eight days passed and still an anchor had yet to be so much as nudged.

In normal circumstances Andrew would have died around day two. At his most prepared he would have found himself carrying a small shoulder bag containing a haul of several tubes of Smarties, a half-eaten bag of Cheetos, a Rubik’s Cube and an empty Tupperware box, all used to ‘wow’ savages of the past in exchange for not taking his life. In the Arizona desert, hundreds of years before the first man thought it’d be a grand idea to build his new home in that particular inhospitable dust-bowl, Andrew’s supply would have lasted him until around tea time of day one.

Luckily the items Lina had ‘borrowed’ from Meadview would hopefully see them through until they jumped into a time after the invention of the convenience store. They could then re-stock and use public transportation to get them to San Francisco.

The problem was that Meadview was so dilapidated, barren and remote that there was hardly ever a chance to find transport to the coast. No matter what the year. Meadview was a place lost in time.

After the fourth day or so it became apparent that it could be weeks or even years before they jumped back to a more convenient time. Each day they awoke the desert seemed more barren than the previous day. The desert had seen little change for tens of thousands of years so it was always impossible to pinpoint which century they were in.

Lina had decided to leave the area that would one day sprout the town of Meadview. It was a risk but staying there and hoping things would go your way was a path to certain death, which ironically, was something the town’s residents could have told them if they’d have just asked when they were around.

In the next five days that passed they jumped dozens of times. Each time somewhere new but each time nowhere near civilisation. At one point they awoke by the banks of the Colorado River deep in the Grand Canyon. Andrew had always dreamed of visiting one of the natural wonders of the world and the view from the bottom of the canyon didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately it would be another eight hundred and fifty years before they could flag down a passing helicopter tour so they quickly found shelter and drifted off to sleep again.

Throughout the jumps Andrew kept up his diary, still mindful of Father Lee’s instructions. He did it whenever he got a moment to himself but he only ever filled it with trivial matters such as the different shades of sand or how funny geckos looked. Lina, however, was far more methodical, keeping track of every minute between jumps and noting the smallest of details. With every jump she did her best to locate landmarks to try and place their position.
